Meet Dr. Darren Schmidt, DC

Dr. Darren Schmidt

I'm a Chiropractor who has been practicing 100% clinical nutrition since 1998 and I've been studying nutrition since 1993.

The most significant health problem I ever experienced almost put me in my grave but also taught me a valuable lesson that was known prior to 1960 but forgotten and now I’ve rediscovered it.

I combine new nutrition information and old textbooks, that hold the secrets to preventing and reversing the major chronic health problems of today, to give you the best chance for optimum health.

Over the course of over 2 decades, I have developed a successful process that has helped thousands of patients address the real underlying cause of chronic illness and find relief from their symptoms holistically.

Do You Suffer From Any Of These Common

Symptoms?

Allergies

The Basics of Allergies

Allergies can be triggered by a number of causes. The two primary ones are environmental and food. It is important to realize that no matter what kind of allergies you have, it usually means there is something wrong going on in the body. It’s easy to blame the trigger but the organ or body dysfunction underneath it is what should be addressed for true healing over time.

How does it start?

Allergic reactions occur when a person’s immune system overreacts to normally harmless substances in the environment. Allergies are a form of hypersensitivity; when the immune system is overwhelmed, allergies occur. Most allergies result in an inflammatory response, which can range from uncomfortable to dangerous.

How We Help

It's a good time to come and see us when you have symptoms of allergies which include runny noses, sinusitis, nasal and chest congestion, itchy, watery eyes, plugged ears, itchy skin, rashes, coughing, sneezing, upper respiratory congestion, and infection. We will uncover the root cause of the allergic reaction and find the best course of action for your unique needs.

Anxiety & Depression

The Basics of Depression & Anxiety

Maybe you can’t get out of bed or you have a debilitating sadness. A dark cloud follows you around. You are grieving still, and it’s been a year or more since your loved one passed. You are crying at the drop of a hat. You wish you could just end this feeling.

Anxiety can cause physical symptoms such as a racing heart, dry mouth, and numbness, while also leading to excessive worries and fears. These feelings can be irrational but difficult to shake, leading to hyper-awareness and fear of leaving the house. Anxiety can also lead to obsessive behaviors, such as repeatedly checking things, and can greatly impact self-esteem.

How does it start?

Anxiety and depression can be caused by neurotransmitter imbalances, which may be a result of an unhealthy gut environment. The gut produces the majority of the body's neurotransmitters, including serotonin. The brain requires good fats, amino acids, trace minerals, and B-vitamins to function properly, which are obtained through nutrient-dense foods. Organ dysfunction, such as problems with the thyroid or adrenal gland, can also cause depression and anxiety. Parasites and other immune challenges can also contribute to these conditions by stealing nutrients and expelling toxins.

How We Help

Our approach targets nutrient deficiencies and promotes healing through real, quality food to address the root cause of issues like depression and anxiety, without the use of potentially harmful drugs.

Diabetes

The Basics of Diabetes & Blood Sugar Problems

Blood sugar levels refer to the glucose circulating in the bloodstream, which comes from consuming sugar and carbohydrates. Pre-diabetes, diabetes, and hypoglycemia are some of the abnormalities that can occur with the body's regulation of sugar.

How does it start?

Excessive carbohydrate consumption can cause the pancreas to stop producing enough insulin or the body's tissues to become resistant, leading to diabetes. Hypoglycemia, which is caused by a sudden increase in blood sugar levels followed by a sharp decrease, can also lead to diabetes if left untreated. At this point, you feel tired, cranky, and have pain. You crave more sugar, caffeine, or tobacco if depending on your habits.

How We Help

If you experience symptoms of blood sugar issues, such as shakiness, brain fog, and fatigue, consider visiting NHCAA for holistic diabetes treatment. Poor nutrition is often the root cause of blood sugar problems, which can be treated with dietary changes and supplements recommended by NHCAA practitioners.

Poor Children's Health

Nutritionist for Children

As a parent, you prioritize your child's health and well-being, but fevers, congestion, and other illnesses can be scary. School can also be a stressor with learning difficulties or diagnoses like ADD, ADHD, fatigue, or depression. Autism, Asperger's, and Spectrum Disorders can also impact the whole family. However, the body has incredible healing abilities.

How does it start?

The gut can be compromised at birth and later due to factors like antibiotics, immunizations, formula feeding, and food sensitivities. As immunity originates in the intestines, better gastrointestinal (GI) function prevents illnesses and is linked to the brain's health. Nutritional deficiencies can also develop if the intestines are not functioning correctly.

How We Help

Our child health services in Ann Arbor can provide support to the growing body, boost the immune system, and aid the nervous system. We also offer solutions to common childhood problems, including digestive issues and skin rashes. Our nutritionist can recommend healthy food choices to develop lifelong habits.

Mental & Brain Function

The Basics of Mental & Brain Function

The brain is responsible for processing and recalling information, controlling involuntary functions, and activating fight/flight and rest/repair mechanisms. To perform these functions optimally, the brain needs proper nourishment and must be free of toxins or yeast.

How does it start?

The brain requires specific nutrients, including good fats, proteins, minerals, and vitamins, as well as a healthy digestive tract, for optimal function. Nutritional deficiencies can cause cloudy thinking, lack of focus, and other symptoms. Additionally, looking at a computer screen for extended periods of time or engaging in mentally demanding work can strain the brain. Poor diets containing soy, cereal, and artificial fats and chemicals in infancy may contribute to conditions like ADD or ADHD.

How We Help

If you're struggling with memory loss, brain fog, or fatigue, it may be time to identify the root cause of these symptoms.

Fatigue

The Basics of Fatigue

Fatigue can be caused by poor nutrition, lack of sleep, anxiety, or chronic fatigue syndrome. Symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome include exhaustion, sleep problems, memory problems, brain fog, visual disturbances, sensitivity to light, depression, muscle or joint pain, allergies, headaches, tender lymph nodes, sore throat, irritable bowels, chills, and night sweats.

How does it start?

Fatigue can result from various factors, such as traumatic experiences, ongoing stress, poor nutrition, or inadequate sleep. The root causes of fatigue are often dysfunctions in one or more organs.

How We Help

If you are experiencing regular or recurring fatigue that interferes with your daily life, our nutritional experts can help develop a personalized treatment plan using whole food supplements and sustainable changes to your eating habits. This can improve body systems such as adrenal and thyroid function, digestion, and brain function to alleviate fatigue, which is a common symptom we address.

Hormonal Imbalance

The Basics of Hormonal Imbalance

While estrogen and testosterone are well-known hormones, there are many others involved in the endocrine system, with the liver, pancreas, and adrenals playing vital roles in hormonal health.

What does it start?

Hormones can get imbalanced due to excessive carbohydrate consumption, toxicity of chemicals and metals, and stress. Carbohydrates increase digestive hormones, toxins block hormones from functioning correctly, and stress upsets the hormone system.

How We Help

Hormonal imbalances can cause various symptoms such as hot flashes, fatigue, PMS, menopause, low libido, night sweats, acne, and weight gain. Nutritional programs must be tailored to an individual's unique needs. Our practitioners identify the root cause and provide customized hormonal imbalance treatment for your unique needs.

Weight Loss Struggles

The Basics of Weight Loss

Contrary to popular belief, sugar, not fat, causes weight gain. Eating quality fats, vegetables, and proteins while reducing sugar, starches, and grains can lead to a leaner body. Good quality fats include olive oil, coconut oil, and pastured butter. Avoid junk food, processed food, and chemicalized food with additives and preservatives as they can clog up your hormone system and prevent weight loss. Hormonal imbalances and heavy metal toxicity can also hinder weight loss.

How does it start?

Poor food choices, including those high in empty carbohydrates and chemicals, can lead to weight loss struggles and damage to the gut lining. Processed foods and non-foods like sugars, grains, and GMOs contribute to this damage, leading to decreased nutrient absorption, organ dysfunction, and difficulty losing weight. A nutritional weight loss diet is the remedy.

How We Help

You may have tried a range of diets and exercise regimes, from Atkins to South Beach, but without success. Research shows that weight loss is primarily influenced by diet, with exercise playing a smaller role. At our center, we take weight loss nutrition seriously with a two-pronged approach. Firstly, we make recommendations on dietary choices and supplements to help your body begin the healing process by targeting any nutritional deficiencies. Secondly, we identify the root cause preventing your body from shedding weight, and create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

Lyme Disease

The Basics of Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is caused by approximately 80 different organisms that live inside cells, with the first one discovered in the 1980s called Borrelia Burgdorferi, found in Lyme, Connecticut.

How does it start?

Lyme disease includes co-infections like parasites, mold, viruses, bacteria, and mycotoxins. Symptoms such as fatigue, achy joints, poor sleep, and chronic muscle pain may suggest Lyme.

How We Help

Properly preparing the body is crucial to effectively treating Lyme disease and preventing a reoccurrence. Enhancing drainage, increasing cellular energy production, eliminating parasites, and removing toxins throughout the body are essential steps. If you find this confusing or are unsure about the process, don't worry! Our team understands the complexities and is ready to guide you through it.

Headaches & Migraines

The Basics of Headaches & Migraines

Headaches can be caused by chemical activity in the brain or muscle, structural, or nerve problems in the neck. Tension headaches, migraines, cluster headaches, and daily persistent headaches are all types with various causes and symptoms.

How does it start?

Headaches can be caused by various factors such as allergies, sinus problems, dehydration, dental or ear issues, grinding teeth at night, inflammation of arteries, food additives and preservatives like MSG, carbon monoxide poisoning, and rebound headaches from overusing pain medication.

How We Help

Our holistic approach identifies and address your body system's needs, promoting overall health and alleviating your main symptom. We also offer chiropractic and applied kinesiology services to help relieve headaches caused by structural impairments, including those related to TMJ.

Pain & Aches

The Basics of Pain

Pain can be felt as discomfort in different areas of the body, such as joints, knees, hands, fingers, and back. It can manifest as burning, tingling, shooting, dull ache, or cramping sensations.

How does it start?

Pain is the body's way of signaling tissue damage and is often caused by underlying inflammation.

How We Help

Our approach focuses on healing the root cause of pain rather than simply masking symptoms. We use herbs, nutrients, and chiropractic techniques to quickly facilitate the inflammatory process and allow for complete healing.

Poor Digestion

The Basics of Poor Digestion

Digestion breaks down food, absorbs nutrients, and eliminates waste. Poor digestion can cause issues such as bloating, constipation, diarrhea, cramping, weight gain, heartburn, and loss of appetite. It can also lead to less well-known symptoms like arthritis, skin problems, and allergies.

How does it start?

Poor digestion can be caused by various factors such as consuming foods that don't suit your body, refined sugar, and processed foods. Heavy antibiotic use, exposure to toxins, hormonal imbalance, or infection with parasites or other microbes can also lead to digestive issues.

How We Help

We offers guidance on digestive health like which foods to eat and avoid for digestive health, as well as recommending supplements to aid digestion. We also identify organ dysfunction and provide specific nutrients for optimal repair.

Too Many Medications

Getting Off of Medications

Any unintended repercussions caused by medication are considered side effects. While medication can be beneficial for those in need, its positive effects are often limited. The ultimate objective of healthcare should be to reduce the need for prescription drugs.

How We Help

Most medications target symptoms and not the root cause of the problem. Symptoms are signals of underlying organ dysfunction and nutritional deficiencies. We will uncover the root cause of the organ dysfunction and find the best course of holistic action for your unique needs with the ultimate goal of no medications.

Mystery Illness

The Basics of Mystery Illnesses

If you've been seeking medical help without any answers, it is not uncommon to feel disheartened. Many bodily symptoms are often dismissed as unexplainable or undiagnosable. I recall my own experience with an MD who simply attributed my back pain to age when I was just 36. This was unacceptable to me, and it is a common issue among patients. Patients are frequently told to "deal with it" or that nothing can be done, but this isn't always the case. If you've ever been told that your symptoms are just due to stress, it's time to dig deeper for a more comprehensive answer. Although stress can diminish the immune system and make us more vulnerable to illnesses, it's important to remember that stress is a normal part of life. What's abnormal is how our body reacts to stress, which can manifest in symptoms such as heart palpitations, racing thoughts, fatigue, and sleep issues.

How does it start?

Did you know that most health problems arise from inadequate nutrition and organ dysfunction? Even with a well-balanced diet, it's almost impossible to provide the body with everything it requires to function optimally. As the deficiencies worsen, symptoms become more severe, indicating that the organs are becoming increasingly exhausted.

How We Help

Our team specializes in solving hard-to-diagnose medical cases. Utilizing Nutrition Response Testing and comprehensive lab work, we can determine the root cause of your discomfort and identify which organs require support. We'll supplement your body with the necessary nutrients and recommend foods that are best suited for you. With our expertise, we can help you overcome your unexplainable illness.

Skin Problems

The Basics of Skin Problems

Skin problems stem from internal factors. Even recurring external bites from scabies, chronic poison ivy, or fungal infections indicate a weak immune system internally. Although topical treatments can offer temporary relief, if you're experiencing long-term discomfort, the issue must be addressed at its core.

How does it start?

Skin problems can be caused by a weakened immune system due to factors like malnourishment, toxins, food sensitivities, and a poor diet. Insects, bugs, fungus, and parasites prefer people with weak immune systems. To improve skin health, it's important to improve overall health and strengthen the immune system. Eliminating parasites can help with psoriasis, while weak adrenals could cause hives. Rashes may be from a hyperactive or confused immune system.

How We Help

If you're looking for guidance on dietary changes and supplements for healthy skin, look no further than NHCAA practitioners. They can recommend healthy oils, the right calcium intake, protein consumption, and a fortified immune system to promote healing for your body and skin.

Thyroid Issues

The Basics of Thyroid Problems

Thyroid problems manifest in various ways, including fatigue, sleep troubles, weight changes, anxiety, depression, hair loss, dry skin, and cognitive issues. Decreased immunity and neck/shoulder pain are also common. Blood work can reveal abnormal levels of TSH, T3, and T4 hormones if thyroid function is severely compromised.

How does it start?

Thyroid issues arise due to a lack of minerals in our diet, particularly iodine, which is deficient in most people. Toxins like chlorine, bromine, mercury, and aluminum also accumulate in tissues, affecting thyroid function by competing with iodine in the body.

How We Help

Our team at NHCAA offers a comprehensive assessment of your body to determine the nutrients that could help you feel better and improve the functionality of your organs, especially the thyroid. Our tailored approach ensures that each person is evaluated individually and that recommendations are made based on their specific needs. Our targeted approach to thyroid healing has proven successful in enhancing health and wellbeing.

Weak Immune System

The Basics of a Weak Immune System

Signs of a weak immune system include frequent sickness, antibiotic use, missed workdays, low energy, and chronic infections. Repairing organs and systems in the abdomen such as intestines, lymphatics, and friendly bacteria can correct a weak immune system.

How does it start?

The immune system can be compromised by a variety of factors, with poor food and drink choices being the most common one. Other culprits include overuse of antibiotics, vaccinations, NSAID pain medications, poor air and water quality, stress, toxicity from heavy metals or chemicals, surgeries, and radiation.

How We Help

At NHCAA, we understand that every person's body is unique and, therefore, requires a customized approach. Our practitioners dive deep to identify the underlying cause of any imbalances and determine the most effective course of action to address your specific needs. Whether you require detoxification, tissue repair, inflammation reduction, or digestion repair, we provide personalized wellness programs that cater to your unique requirements and help you strengthen your immune system.

Many Other Symptoms

There are countless variations of symptoms that you could be experiencing. However, most of these health issues stem from nutritional deficiencies and organ dysfunction. Even if you have a well-balanced diet, it can be challenging to consume all the necessary nutrients for optimal health. As the deficiencies progress, the symptoms become more intense as the organs become more depleted.

At NHCAA, we aim to identify which organs require support and address the underlying conditions that are causing your symptoms. We take a holistic approach to trea1 Columnting the root cause, which results in the resolution of your symptoms.

No commitment necessary. A new patient coordinator will contact you to answer any questions you may have prior to booking your consultation.

What is the mechanism of chronic disease?

The most common mechanism of chronic disease is called Lactic Acidosis and was first discovered in 1843 but forgotten by 1961. This mechanism may turn on from several Causes including the waste products of infectious organisms including mold, fungus, candida, virus, parasites, and bacteria. Toxins like metals and chemicals make it worse. The most common Cause is from your cells always burning sugar and never burning fat. Even if you are skinny, you still have to burn fat sometimes to stop the Mechanism of chronic disease.

Only At The NHCAA, Your Local Holisitc Center, Are All 3 Factors Addressed To Eliminate Chronic Diseases

Dr. Schmidt discovered Lactic Acidosis as a major cause of illness and disease when he suffered from black mold exposure.

In researching a solution for his own malady, he read about Lactic Acidosis from old medical textbooks - when most medical research was feeding studies versus pharmaceutical companies, as is the norm today.

Based on his studies, Dr. Schmidt developed a method that is used to address the 3 important factors (symptoms, causes, and mechanisms) to holistically resolve chronic diseases and achieve Total Health Restoration.

You Educate Us About Your Condition

& Our Holistic Practitioners Educate You On The Fundamentals Of Nutrition & Healing

Whether you are local or long-distance, we provide patient-focused care with a tailored-made holistic program to treat the underlying cause of your symptoms while guiding you towards Total Health Restoration.

STEP 1

New Patient Appointment - First Visit

  • Complete the natural healthcare industry’s most comprehensive assessment questionnaire: “Follow The Physiology.” This assessment helps us determine the cause(s), the mechanism, and what organs need the most help causing your clinical symptoms.

  • Complete a Heart Sound Recorder test. The Heart Sound Recorder is a general wellness cardiac stress monitor. A specialized microphone is placed over each of the four valve areas of your heart to graph the sound and movement of the heart. The rate, rhythm, and tone of the heart are evaluated. Nutritional deficiencies can be observed using this method.

  • You will review your health history, assessment results, and wellness goals with your NHCAA health practitioner.

  • Through a process called Muscle Testing, a biofeedback analysis technique, your NHCAA health practitioner will be able to assess and determine what organs are in need of support.

STEP 2

Report of Findings Appointment - Second Visit

  • Based on the results gathered during your first visit, your NHCAA health practitioner will review your report of findings with you and answer any questions.

  • A personalized NHCAA wellness program, designed specifically for you to achieve your health goals, is reviewed with your holistic practitioner. Most wellness programs include dietary recommendations and exact nutrient supplementation requirements needed to repair specific organs to bring about balance and better health.

  • Depending on your specific program and goals, follow-up appointments will be scheduled with your practitioner to assess your progress and make adjustments to your program where needed until total health restoration is achieved.

Through this process, we address all 3 factors of chronic illness to holistically resolve the underlying cause of your chronic symptoms.

Whether you're local or long distance, we offer a number of accommodating visitation options to fit your specific schedule.
